What is Java teak root and where does it come from?
Teak root literally is the roots of teak trees. Years ago, the roots from fallen teak trees were left in the ground or burned. More recently the Indonesian government have been extracting the root as part of a reforestation plan, promoting growth and to allow new plantations to form. Local craftsmen have learned to create wonderful pieces of furniture, carvings and accessories from the extracted root wood. As a result, instead of discarding the roots as waste, local communities are able to reclaim them to create these wonderful pieces. We source our reclaimed root wood items from numerous small villages in the island of Java, Indonesia, where local craftsmen will make each piece by hand, usually specialising in a few select designs. We may source bowls and vases from one village, tables and benches from another. In this way, we help support the local communities and economy.
Why choose teak root furniture?
Due to the very fact that teak root comes from the ground, it has a natural durability, is very hard, resistant to moisture and suitable for both indoors and outdoors. The uniqueness of the root wood, means no two pieces are ever exactly the same, with interesting shapes, knots and grains adding character to each piece. The exact shape of each piece will be guided by the natural formation of the the roots. It has rich deep colour tones and is very tactile.
